ALAD Summer Showcase

The ALAD dance school proudly presented their summer showcase in July 2024. This featured solo and group performances in a variety of styles from students of all ages.

The event was lit with ProLights StudioCOB fixtures, complemented with wireless uplighters on the groups marketing banners.

Event Lighting in Cambridge

In October 2022 we were invited to provide exterior lighting for the Anglian Learning Trust at one of their school’s open evenings. This required a quick setup after the school day but before members of the public were due on site.

A set of Prolights StudioCOB FC fixtures were used to light the Atrium’s metalwork in the school’s red colour.

Versatile LEDJ Rapid battery uplighters were used outside to illuminate the main walkway to the building, with IP rated LED flood lighting used to light up another teaching block.

For a change of scene, energy efficient LED festoon was used to add a warm glow to another courtyard area.

Chesterton Community College

We were invited to supply a small package of lighting to our friends at Chesterton Community College in Cambridge this week. This was to add some accent lighting to two areas for their open evening.

We provided a set of 750w ETC Source 4 profile lanterns to provide a gobo wash over an outdoor performance area, and another set of Prolights StudioCOB FC fixtures for ambient lighting in a performance area.

During the day we also supported their drama department with a quick service of their lighting rig in their black box studio, with all lanterns back in service after some lamp changes.

Sing! Community Choir 10 Year Celebration

Sing! Community Choir Cambridge turned 10 this year. We were invited to provide audio equipment and support for their celebration event.

The show featured a choir of over 60; with a mix of whole group and more intimate performances. Each a vocal performance was accompanied by a core live band of drums, bass, guitar keys with guest instrumentalists joining for each song – who doesn’t love a ukulele!

We provided an engineer for the event, along with microphones, radio mics, monitoring and cabling for the event.

Henge @ Cambridge Junction

Lighting & Sound Services were recently asked to provide a small floor package of 2 way moles and Martin Atomic strobes for Henge at Cambridge Junction to support their out of this world performance. Some photos from social media are below:

Amy-Leigh Academy of Dance Gala Show

Lighting & Sound Services provided technical services for the Amy-Leigh Academy of Dance birthday gala performance. The show featured 22 acts from tots to teens in a variety of dance genres. Vari*Lite and ETC Source 4 fixtures were provided to support the show, as well as backdrop projection, sponsor advertising projection and full lighting and sound production.

The show was a great success. Unfortunately due to the age of the performers, we are unable to reproduce any photos from the show.

Trinity Laban Conservatoire – A Night at the Opera

Lighting & Sound Services were recently asked to provide sound reinforcement for a private charity event, featuring an outdoor performance from musicians from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, Greenwich. The challenge here was to provide subtle sound reinforcement for opera, which is not normally amplified, in an outdoor setting.

We provided a Midas M32 desk and Sennheiser condenser mics for distant micing with some subtle EQ and effects to bring the feel of opera to the grounds of the event. Modest monitoring was provided – just enough for the musicians to be confident in their performance whilst not being rock’n’roll.

The event was a great success; some photos below:

My Name is Ann

Lighting & Sound Services were recently contacted to design lighting for Bassingbourn Village College’s devised piece ‘My Name is Ann’. The performance was an abstract drama and movement piece with inspiration taken from Shakespeare’s sonnets.

As well as design for the piece, we supplemented the available lighting rig with ETC Source 4 profiles, ETC Source 4 PARs, Prolights StudioCOB fixtures and Vari*Lite moving spots. Some photos are below:

Barnadiston Hall – equipment update

Lighting & Sound Services were brought in to update the equipment at Barnadiston Hall Prep School. The school, set in the Suffolk countryside, was having problems with nearly 3 dozen radio mics and an ageing analog sound desk, all being driven by novice students and staff with limited knowledge of audio. The school had purchased a digital desk but was unsure how to use it to best effect.

Working to a tight deadline of the annual summer musical production, we removed the analog desk and set up the new digital desk. The mountain of Trantec ratio mics were rationalised to 24 units with proper frequency coordination to reduce RF problems. We provided replacement mic capsules for damaged transmitters – one of the problems the school faced.

We also installed an Allen & Heath AR0804 stage box to allow key players in the band to be connected in to the PA system, for a more balanced sound in the room. Part of this work included supply and installation of DI boxes, data cabling, and a pair of 10″ coaxial stage monitors in order to give the band a clear feed of the stage dialogue and independent control of lead piano.

Training was provided to staff and students to cover the fundamentals of sound, how and why certain things happen, and bespoke training on their own Allen & Heath Qu 32. This empowered them to give a polished performance night after night, with no cracking mics, clear, intelligible vocals, and not a hint of feedback! This led to a happy school and happy parents during the 4 night run in June 2019.
